Belief contraction through safe formulas

چکیده

1 In this paper we consider approaches to belief revision and contraction in modal logics that are based on a translation of an agent’s beliefs in modal logic to first-order logic, where revision or contraction is performed before translating the result back into the original modal language. Contraction presents a unique problem, as theorems of the modal language can be accidentally removed, which would destroy the correspondence between a system of modal logic and its first-order simulation. We propose a solution for this problem based on defining safe-to-remove-parts of target formulas for contraction.

Horn Clause Belief Change: Contraction Functions

The standard (AGM) approach to belief change assumes that the underlying logic is at least as strong as classical propositional logic. This paper investigates an account of belief change, specifically contraction, where the underlying logic is that governing Horn clauses. Thus this work sheds light on the theoretical underpinnings of belief change by weakening a fundamental assumption of the ar...

On Computing Belief Change Operations using Quantified Boolean Formulas

In this paper, we show how an approach to belief revision and belief contraction can be axiomatised by means of quantified Boolean formulas. Specifically, we consider the approach of belief change scenarios, a general framework that has been introduced for expressing different forms of belief change. The essential idea is that for a belief change scenario (K, R, C), the set of formulas K, repre...

Kernel Contraction and Base Dependence: Redundancy in the Base Resulting in Different Types of Dependence

The AGM paradigm of belief change studies the dynamics of belief states in light of new information. Finding, or even approximating, dependent or relevant beliefs to a change is valuable because, for example, it can narrow the set of beliefs considered during belief change operations. Gärdenfors’ preservation criterion (GPC) suggests that formulas independent of a belief change should remain in...

On Computing Solutions to Belief Change Scenarios

Belief change scenarios have been introduced as a framework for expressing different forms of belief change. The essential idea is that for a belief change scenario (K;R;C) the set of formulas K, representing the knowledge base, is modified so that the sets of formulas R and C are respectively true in, and consistent with, the result. By restricting the form of a belief change scenario one obta...

Rational Elimination of DL-Lite TBox Axioms

An essential task in managing description logic (DL) ontologies is the elimination of problematic axioms. Such elimination is formalised as the operation of contraction in belief change. In this paper, we investigate contraction over DL-LiteR TBoxes. In belief change, a well known approach for defining contraction is via epistemic entrenchments which are preference orderings over formulas. The ...
